How to choose the right coffee table size
A few measurements can help you find a table that feels comfortable and fits your living room.
1. Measure your sofa
Measure the sofa’s total width, then measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion. A table at about the same height as the seat, or a little lower, is a practical starting point. Crate & Barrel suggests no more than 3 inches lower or 1 inch higher than the seat.
2. Check the space in front
Measure from the sofa’s front edge to the nearest furniture or obstruction. Allow space between the sofa and table to sit down and reach the surface. Crate & Barrel suggests 14 inches in its buying guide and 18 inches in its furniture-layout guide. These are different starting points; try the space yourself and choose what feels comfortable.
Also check the walking route around the table. Your household may need more room for a mobility aid, children, pets or doors. These estimates do not establish safe or accessible clearance.
3. Choose a length and shape
Look for a table that suits the length of your seating without crowding the room. A longer sofa may accommodate a longer table; a compact sofa may work better with a shorter one. Oval or round shapes can soften corners; rectangular tables offer a longer surface. With a sectional, measure the open space inside the seating arrangement and check that the table can be reached from the seats you use most.
A worked example
Suppose your sofa seat is 18 inches (45.7 cm) high. Using the height range above gives a starting range of 15–19 inches (38.1–48.3 cm) for the table. If you try an 18-inch (45.7 cm) gap and a table that is 24 inches (61 cm) deep, together they use 42 inches (106.7 cm) from the sofa’s front edge. Measure what remains beyond the table and check that it works for your room.
Before you buy
- Mark the table’s footprint on the floor with removable tape or paper. Walk around it and try sitting down.
- Check the full dimensions, including any overhang, drawers or lift-top movement.
- Measure doorways, stairs and delivery access. Confirm the assembled size and delivery details with the seller.
- Consider rounded edges, stable construction and the surface material for your household.
